IcelandThings Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 28, 2026
IcelandThings is a travel guide app for Iceland. This policy explains what IcelandThings does (and does not do) with information on your device.
TL;DR
- IcelandThings does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information about you.
- IcelandThings does not use analytics, advertising, or third-party trackers.
- Everything you create in the app — group members, schedule, favorites — is stored only on your device.
- The app makes anonymous network requests to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Mapillary, Apple Maps, and venue websites to load photos and imagery. These services have their own privacy policies.
Information stored on your device
IcelandThings stores the following on your device, in your iPhone's local app storage. None of it is transmitted to IcelandThings, the developer, or any third-party server.
- Group members. Names, ages, emojis, mobility/access settings, interests, and any notes you choose to add.
- Schedule items. Venues you've added to your trip plan, dates, optional times, and notes.
- Favorites. Venues you've starred.
- Language preference. Your chosen interface language.
- Photo cache. Cached image URLs and image bytes the app has fetched. Stored in your app's Caches directory.
To delete all of this data, delete the IcelandThings app from your device.
Network requests
IcelandThings makes the following anonymous network requests to populate venue content. None of these requests include personally identifying information about you, your account, or your device beyond what the operating system and the remote service automatically observe (your IP address).
- Wikipedia API (en.wikipedia.org) — to look up venue articles and thumbnail images. Operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. See the Wikimedia Privacy Policy.
- Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org, upload.wikimedia.org) — to find and download geotagged venue photos. Same Wikimedia policy.
- Mapillary (graph.mapillary.com) — to load street-level photos taken near a venue. Operated by Mapillary (a Meta company). See the Mapillary Privacy Policy. Requests contain only the venue's coordinates, never yours.
- Venue websites — to fetch a venue's public preview image (the same image the venue publishes for link sharing). The request goes to that venue's own website.
- Apple Look Around and Apple Maps — to load street-level imagery, satellite snapshots, and map tiles. Operated by Apple. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Apple Translation framework — on-device translation. No text is sent to Apple servers; translation happens locally on your iPhone.
- Linked websites — when you tap "Visit Website" or "Read on Wikipedia", iOS opens the link in your browser. That browser handles the request, not IcelandThings.
IcelandThings has no servers of its own. There is no IcelandThings backend that sees your usage.
Optional location
IcelandThings can optionally access your device location to sort venues by distance ("nearest first"). This is purely optional and uses iOS's standard location-permission dialog.
- Location data is used only on your device to compute distances.
- Location data is never transmitted off your device.
- You can deny location permission and the app will work normally; venues will just be shown without distance sorting.
- You can revoke location permission anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → IcelandThings.
Children
IcelandThings is a travel guide for groups, which may include children. Children of any age can be added as group members. No information about anyone you add to a group is ever transmitted off your device. IcelandThings is not directed specifically at children and does not knowingly collect information from children, because it does not knowingly collect information from anyone.
Your rights
Because IcelandThings does not collect or store any data about you on any server, there is no account to delete and no data export to request. To delete the data you have created in the app, delete the app from your device.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how IcelandThings handles information, the updated policy will be posted at this URL and the "Last updated" date above will change. Substantive changes will also be noted in app release notes.
